El Gran Maestro Leinier Domínguez, ajedrecista más fuerte de América Latina en la actualidad, hizo una visita a la provincia de Pinar del Río en la mañana del sábado 15 de mayo de 2010 para sostener una simultánea de ajedrez con 25 tableros en el salón de la Iglesia Bautista occidental sita en la calle Recreo y Retiro en la Ciudad de Pinar del Río.
El más destacado ajedrecista cubano desde los tiempos de José Raúl Capablanca fue recibido con regocijo y sencillez por niños y adultos que colmaban el espacio generosamente facilitado por esa congregación cristiana. El Pastor Becerra pronunció unas palabras de bienvenida a Leinier y a todos los que respondieron a la convocatoria. A estas amables palabras de acogida el insigne trebejista respondió con la sencillez que lo caracteriza y agradeció la invitación del Pastor y la participación de todos. Seguidamente el Gran Maestro Adrián Abreu, entrenador de Leinier, tuvo una animada intervención de agradecimiento y destacó la importancia de este tipo de actividades para estimular y elevar el nivel de juego de los niños.
Momentos después el Gran Maestro FIDE abrió la simultánea enfrentándose a 13 tableros defendidos por niños, acompañado de su entrenador que atendió a diez tableros defendidos por adultos. Después de los niños tuvieron la posibilidad de jugar con el joven y asequible campeón, aficionados y entrenadores que iban accediendo a los tableros que se vaciaban.
La hospitalidad de la Iglesia fue colmada por un sencillo brindis para los participantes.
Todos ganaron: Pinar del Río tuvo la posibilidad de contar con la presencia y las jugadas de uno de los más reconocidos ajedrecistas a nivel mundial. La Iglesia Bautista Occidental tuvo el honor y la alegría de invitarlo y recibirlo en sus locales y, además, tuvo la oportunidad de dar una apreciada contribución a la vida deportiva y espiritual de esta Ciudad necesitada de actividades como esta que cultivan no solo la inteligencia sino también el corazón y el alma de los cubanos. Los niños tuvieron la emoción y el inmenso gozo de verse jugando con Campeón de tan alta talla y tan sencillo corazón. Los entrenadores y aficionados recibieron el regalo y el reconocimiento de campeones y del público asistente.
Todos los pinareños agradecemos este gesto de Leinier Domínguez, de su entrenador y de la Iglesia Bautista Occidental. Esperamos que pueda repetirse en otras ocasiones, que tenga mayor difusión por los medios locales y que muchos más coterráneos podamos disfrutar de tan valioso evento deportivo.
